Cory Aquino and the "L" Sign

The whole world is mourning Corazon “Cory” Aquino’s death.

Pictures and video footage are all over the news, and I just wanted to explain something: the “L” sign, which was one of Aquino’s trademarks.  The “L” stands for laban, one of the Tagalog words for “fight.”

I just thought this may be helpful to my non-Filipino readers.

  3. It was the party of Ninoy when he still alive. Positively I would like to add it as a Love sign. Fight for love to the Filipino People.

    Actually, as far as I can remember, the “L” sign comes from their political party – Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (or, PDP-LABAN). “LABAN” is, of course as you said means fight. So, I think they maximized their party name and use it as branding (using the “L” sign) during the 1986 campaign.

  6. I know this since I was a teenager in the 80’s…I was there at the EDSA revolution, in 1986 because we had no classes in UP , so we went there for curiosity sake and we thought it was cool to participate.
