Happy Anniversary, United Church of Manila!

This morning I attended the 84th anniversary celebration of the United Church of Manila (UCM). This church is where we have Resonate Worship. UCM is part of the United Church of Christ Philippines (UCCP). This denomination’s history goes all the way back to the early 1900’s, when Protestant missionaries first came to this country.

  2. Hi Kuya Kevs,

Just want to ask whether UCCP is a Catholic Church? If not, what is the difference of your beliefs among them and the Protestants and Baptists?

    Thanks

  3. UCCP is a Protestant church.

That’s a great question. I will answer it as simply and as possible.

Technically, any Christian church that is not Catholic is classified as Protestant (Baptist, Methodists, Anglican, etc). In other words, a Baptist is a Protestant.

The primary difference the role of tradition and the basis of authority.

Tradition plays a very important role in the Catholic faith. Protestants, on the other hand, follow the sola scriptura (Latin, “by scripture alone”) pattern for our faith. In other words, I don’t necessarily follow traditions if I don’t see them in the Bible.

I’ll give you a simple example. Protestant pastors are allowed to marry because nothing in the Bible forbids marriage.

I hope this helps, just email me if you have further questions.

  4. kuya, would you know the other denominations under UCCP-what about Iglesia ni Cristo or Jehovah’s Witness and the Oneness Religion? are they under UCCP?

  5. Congrats to UCM!!! I used to attend UCM after college for a while.
