Confessions of a Single Campus Minister

Introduction:

I’m working on the introduction to my book. Here is an excerpt:

I wish I could tell you that I’m some world-renown expert on love, sex, and relationships. I’m not. I was a dateless wonder in high school. College was a little better, but not much. I’ve experienced breakups, rejection, blind dates (a few of which made me wish I was blind), and all that other “fun” stuff that comes with being single. At age 35, I’m still searching for a lifetime partner. I struggle with lust, loneliness, and all the other trials that come with being a single man. I’ve come to dread those last few embarrassing moments of a wedding reception (I usually leave early, before someone can throw a garter at me).

Don’t worry—this is not a guidebook on how to stay single until you are 35. It is not a book about the “gift of singleness.” I’m just letting you know that I can relate to many of your struggles as a single person.

Single or not, life is still great! The past five years, in fact, have been one of the most enjoyable seasons of my life. Allow me to share how I ended up in Manila and why I wrote this book. From America to the Philippines

I committed my life to God at a fairly young age. I knew I wanted to be a minister before I graduated high school. College was an incredible time of spiritual growth for me—it made me want to become a campus minister myself.

My opportunity to do campus ministry came a few years later. I joined a missionary organization and chose to do ministry here in Manila. . .

  1. Agh. Hi Kevs, I know it’s not your fault, but the ad at the side of your blog features “Cebu Dating” — parang hindi ata ito ang gugustuhin mong nakalagay sa blog mo :p

  2. Hi Moks. I noticed that–it is a google ad. They do cycle different ads besides that one.

I have mixed feelings about google ads. I am actually much more concerned with some of the weird religious and astrology ads that appear–I try to watch it and I have blocked several of them. It seems that google has got the message and stopped posting them.

I think I’ll block the dating sites, but it honestly doesn’t concern me that much. I’m not opposed to internet dating sites, provided that people use them wisely. I’ve talked to enough young Pinoys/Pinays to know that they go to these sites with our without my “encouragement.”

    Here’s my dilemma:
By posting google ads, I don’t have complete control over what ads appear on my website.

At the same time, the google ads are all over the other sites that Filipinos visit (such as friendster and multiply). Many of the ads are positive, like Christian websites, etc.

One day I may post an article called “google adsense ethics” and see what other readers think of this issue.

My final decision may be to remove these ads altogether. We’ll see.

    Thanks for your input!

  3. Hi Kevin! Err…I happen to read your blogs and I’m impressed with everything you’ve written. Hope to get a copy of this new book once it’s out.

May God bless you more with the missions that you have for my country.

    Salamat
    Leslie

  4. Hi again.. I actually subscribed to your site but I haven’t been receiving any updates.. I’m actually not a computer savvy, dunno if something has gone wrong with my subscription. It says my subscription was confirmed but so far, no updates.. Can you help me with this?

Also, I have one question which I would really appreciate if you could help me..

Is there a verse in the bible wherein Jesus said “I am your God and you should worship me” Please send me verses if there’s any..

    Many thanks Kevin in advance!

    Leslie

  5. Hi Leslie,

I sent out updates once a week, that way folks are not flooded with emails every day.

Here’s a few verses that mention Jesus being worshiped or called God:

    Matthew 2:11,
    Matthew 28:17,
    John 1:2-2,
    John 9:38,
    John 20:28

  6. Hi Kevin,

Yeah it’s actually a good idea to send weekly updates, thanks.

  7. Ki Kuya…intro of your new book is impressive. This book could be the best gift for my brothers and friends. How soon can we have copies?

  8. Don’t worry—this is not a guidebook on how to stay single until you are 35.

    This is funny! 🙂

And so I wonder, why I even read your blog when you have never experienced getting married..maybe because you are older, or youve counselled a lot, or you’ve read many books on these topics, or maybe because you are a minister. Still I wonder.

  10. lol 🙂 nah, I think you make sense even if you are single. And I think you’ve grown to love young Filipinos. –sorry, still anonymous.

  11. Look at it this way:

Who is more in touch with the issues of dating, breakups, abstinence, etc–someone who has been married for ten years, or someone who is still single?

    Think about it.
