Cory Aquino and the "L" Sign

The whole world is mourning Corazon “Cory” Aquino’s death.

Pictures and video footage are all over the news, and I just wanted to explain something: the “L” sign, which was one of Aquino’s trademarks.  The “L” stands for laban, one of the Tagalog words for “fight.”

I just thought this may be helpful to my non-Filipino readers.

Note: You can read the comments to see more details on the “L” sign and how it evolved. My readers have shared some historical insights.

  1. Thank you for the explanation kuya kevin.. we are all saddened with the news but it’s good to picture that she is with the King of kings now experiencing no pain anymore..

  2. It was the party of Ninoy when he still alive. Positively I would like to add it as a Love sign. Fight for love to the Filipino People.

    Thanks for the info.

  3. Kuya Kevin,

Actually, as far as I can remember, the “L” sign comes from their political party – Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (or, PDP-LABAN). “LABAN” is, of course as you said means fight. So, I think they maximized their party name and use it as branding (using the “L” sign) during the 1986 campaign.

  4. I know this since I was a teenager in the 80’s…I was there at the EDSA revolution, in 1986 because we had no classes in UP , so we went there for curiosity sake and we thought it was cool to participate.
