Isaiah 42: Broken Things

He won’t break off a bent reed
or put out a dying flame,
but he will make sure
that justice is done.

-Isaiah 42:3 (CEV)

I’m always amazed when I read Isaiah’s prophesies about Jesus Christ. He lived hundreds of years before Jesus, yet he gave supernaturally accurate descriptions of who the Messiah would be.

Here Isaiah presents Jesus as healer. A bent reed, like any other plant stem, is generally useless and beyond repair. It is much easier to simply break it and let another healthy one grow in its place. A smoldering matchstick is equally useless—better to get a new one and start all over. Jesus, however, would never break such a reed or put out a dying flame—He would be the One who could repair broken things.

Read the Gospels and you will see the activity of Jesus the healer. He encountered people with broken bodies, broken spirits, broken hearts, and broken lives. None of them were worthless; none of them were disposable. None were beyond His ability to repair and heal.

I’ve met a lot of people who have experienced some type of brokenness in their lives. Perhaps you think that all you have is broken. Here’s the good news—Jesus can heal broken things!

One of my favorite songs is actually entitled “Broken Things.” The writer (Julie Miller) experienced some of the things I’ve been talking about. Here are some of the lyrics:

You can have my heart
Though it isn’t new
It’s been used and broken
And only comes in blue
It’s been down a long road
And it got dirty on the way
If I give it to you will you make it clean
And wash the shame away

(chorus)
You can have my heart
If you don’t mind broken things
You can have my life if you don’t mind these tears
Well I heard that you make old things new
So I give these pieces all to you
If you want it you can have my heart

Are you broken? Give your life to the true Healer, Jesus Christ.

  1. very true. i am thankful that GOD allowed me to experience that brokenness because it caused me to run to GOD and learn to look to Jesus alone. praise GOD!

  2. Kevin, this is very inspirational. I have been feeling these same things lately and am so happy to have the Healer as my rock. Thanks again for sharing.

  3. I know what it is to be broken and made whole again. My efforts to reach my dreams and desires made me do foolish things which placed me in very humiliating situations. It was then that life became so frustrating and painful. Iwas not living anymore – only existed. Led to God’s comforting presence, I accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and saviour. He made me whole and even better than what I would have become had I got what I wantted my way. Life is so beautiful and I know now how special I am to God. I thirst and hunger for His WORD. There is so much contentment meditating upon God’s written WORD. Having heard I obeyed HIM, by His grace and mercy.
That is God’s love. HE knows what is best for me. I prayed ” let thy will be done.” Now there are still trials and tests. But I no longer am afraid. I know HE won’t give me a test I cannot pass. If God be with me, who can be against me?

  4. Our God is our perfect healer. He knows our pain and He comfort us even to the the lowest moment in our lives. He allowed things to happen for us to draw near closer upon HIm and to be dependent on HIm.I experienced pain truly no one can satisfy our heart except God alone 🙂

  5. aside from being a handicap person, , something happened to me 15 years ago that not only broke my heart but my spirit as well (that still haunts me at times), then God gave me a miracle 9 years ago. I’m still not completely fixed BUT God hasn’t stopped working.

My point is, sometimes God’s healing takes a very long time (because HE has a time-table for everything) but He gets us there.

  6. It is indeed very true, that a broken heart is an offering that the Lord would not despise.

  7. Awesome.

That’s very true.God wants us to come to Him with a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
When where we’re weak,He gives us strength to go on..When we feel hopeless,He is our hope.

Oh by the way,i love to hear that song 🙂

Thanks and have a great weekend, kuya Kevin.
